What’s Left is the second album by Tom Henry, a collection about what remains once the dust settles. Following the big dreams of Songs to Sing and Dance To, it pairs his trademark power-pop hooks with lush arrangements, polished production and a little more of Big Star’s Third/Sister Lovers spirit.
Paul McCartney and Big Star remain touchstones, while strains of Syd Barrett-inspired acid-folk and psychedelic rock bring new colours to the songs. Produced with David Glasebrook and recorded at Shirk Studios in Chicago and The Garden Shed in Oakland, the album mixes Midwestern grit with California sunshine.
“Someone I Need” opens with crunchy tape tones and warm horns, while “It’s Not Meant to Be” turns inward to consider the exhaustion of finding love. Sitar-led “Silverlake Song” offers a wry postcard from Los Angeles, tracing the promise and pitfalls of life in the city.
Henry sings and plays guitar, bass and keys, joined by contributions from Glasebrook, Brian Daley, Joe Daley, Finn Swingley, Lewis Patzner, Graham Patzner, Charles Lloyd and Simon Beins.
The vinyl edition comes in a full-colour jacket with an insert featuring liner notes by Ian F. Svenonius and photography by Austin Warshawsky. The CD is presented in a digipak.
