Released in 1973 on Philadelphia International Records, War Of The Gods stands as one of Billy Paul's most ambitious and singular achievements. Produced by the visionary duo Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff and arranged by Bobby Martin and Lenny Pakula, the album marked a bold departure from the smooth soul of Paul's earlier work, presenting instead a suite of sprawling, spiritually charged compositions that drew equally from jazz, funk, Latin rhythms, rock, and psychedelic soul. With only six tracks across its runtime, the album breathes and unfolds with rare deliberateness, anchored by the extraordinary voice of a singer at the height of his powers.
