All-time Northern Soul Classics - Two fabulous sides
Vocal / Instrumental back-to-back
THE TRAMMPS first came to our attention with their uptempo remake of the standard “Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart”, released on Buddah Records in 1972, a UK No.29 hit. It would lend its name to ‘The Legendary Zing Album’, the creation of hit-mixer Tom Moulton, featuring both sides of our classic reissue single. When Moulton did the final mix of “Hold Back The Night” in New York he was instructed to slow it down, so much so that he was worried about the pitch of Ellis’ vocals. He needn’t have worried, it went on to become their biggest UK hit peaking at No.5, higher than their Saturday Night Fever epic “Disco Inferno” released just a year later. However, it was the instrumental version, “Scrub-Board” that caught the imagination of the Northern Soul scene becoming a forever floorfiller at the Blackpool Mecca and beyond.
