The Forbidden Planet brings together Tomorrow Comes The Harvest’s Jeff Mills, Jean-Phi Dary and Prabhu Edouard, featuring flautist Rasheeda Ali. Moving between electronic and acoustic improvisation, the album creates expansive, constantly evolving sound landscapes through percussion, electronics, keyboards, tabla and vocals, with a special guest appearance by Laurent Vernerey on electric bass.
The project began with the percussive dialogue between Jeff Mills and the late Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen, establishing an approach rooted in instinct, exchange, rhythm and freedom. That spirit continues here: ideas emerge, transform and take new directions as the musicians respond to one another.
Recorded over nearly two years across sessions at Criteria Studios in Miami, Soda Sound and Studio Ferber in Paris, the performances were largely improvised, often capturing the spontaneity of an almost one-take process. The recordings were then refined into the album’s compositional structures.
The 2LP and CD editions feature different track selections and versions. The CD + DVD edition includes footage filmed and recorded live at London’s Jazz Café on 27 September 2025, capturing the band’s fusion of electronic music, jazz, percussion and improvisation.
