1976 proved a key year for reggae in the UK. Roots reggae and dub were reaching a wider audience through sound systems, specialist shops and the underground press, while the heavy bass, echo and rebel spirit began to connect strongly with the emerging punk scene.
At the same time, a softer but equally important British reggae style was taking shape, as lovers rock offered home-grown songs of romance, youth and everyday life for a new generation of UK-based listeners.
This collection offers a vivid snapshot of this golden year in British reggae history. CD1 gathers standout singles that climbed the UK reggae charts, while CD2 turns to the import charts, spotlighting the Jamaican releases that lit up sound systems, specialist shops and dancehalls.
