Freddie Hubbard's artistry was without comparison, balancing itself on talent alone. This Impulse! release was the trumpeter's debut as a leader for the label, the 24-year-old having spent four years in New York by this time and establishing a firm base of contacts in the jazz world, among those featured here including Tommy Flanagan, Curtis Fuller and Louis Hayes. There's also a rare appearance from John Gilmore of Sun Ra Arkestra fame; but the music is far from cosmic in tone or intent, the likes of 'Caravan' and 'Happy Times' instead preferring to make a muted, light-hearted, and multifaceted timbre of the one instrument (trumpet wasn't Hubbard's only brass, having also played mellophone, French horn and tuba at school).
