Soundcity Joburg captures the extraordinary music scene that flourished in Johannesburg between 1969 and 1981, gathering 22 township soul tracks selected by Analog Africa.
As American soul and funk reached South Africa in the 1960s and 1970s, local musicians fused these sounds with traditional rhythms and jazz, forging a distinctly South African style. “Township Soul” became an umbrella term for a wealth of musical approaches, some of which had yet to find a name.
Johannesburg, also known as eGoli, the City of Gold, became a melting pot centred on record labels, studios and performance venues. Artists competed, collaborated and pushed each other forward, pursuing their music despite police harassment and apartheid pass and curfew laws.
This double-LP edition comes in a gatefold sleeve with a 16-page magazine-size booklet packed with rare photographs, vintage newspaper articles, biographies and archival material.
