More Info

Sky Yen receives its first-ever CD release through Cold Spring. Recorded by Pete Shelley in March 1974, two years before he co-founded Buzzcocks, it reveals an early fascination with experimental electronic music.

While studying electronics in Bolton, Shelley built his own oscillator and recorded it on a two-track tape recorder. Echo and other effects transformed electronic tones, drones, feedback and noise into extended pieces with a raw, spontaneous quality, reflecting both the limitations and possibilities of his equipment.

Still a teenager, Shelley was listening to Tangerine Dream, Cluster, Kraftwerk, Can and Faust. Their influence opened up a soundworld far removed from conventional mid-seventies rock and pop. Eventually released on his own Groovy Records label in April 1980, Sky Yen traces his electronic experimentation back to the beginning of his recording career.

The CD comes in a matt-laminate digipak with the original cover design by Pete Shelley and Malcolm Garrett.
