Bristol trio Jabu return with their first release in two years, following A Soft and Gatherable Star. This standalone double A-side Disco Mix 12-inch features four exclusive tracks, including two dub versions, and points towards material being developed for their next album.
“Severn Flood Plain” takes its name from the estuarine landscape near the band’s hometown. A nagging drum-machine pulse drives a jagged, up-tempo turn towards post-punk, while Jasmine Butt’s echo-laced vocals and tremolo guitar evoke the darkness of the tidal landscape.
“Where You Run To” slows the pace into a plaintive, ethereal sprawl. Alex Rendall’s voice glides over a stripped, metronomic backdrop before entwining with ghostly processed clarinet from Will Yates, also known as Memotone.
Cellist Josh Horsley also contributes, with Birthmark guiding the mixing and dub treatments. Throughout, the trio’s dream-pop sound remains rooted in dub’s collaborative processes and Bristol’s musical cross-pollination.
