Mist is the debut album from AEAEA, the duo of Patrick Higgins and Nicolás Jaar. Its guiding image is a ship surrounded by fog, navigating through listening and touch rather than sight: birds, waves, bells and depth soundings revealing a hidden landscape.
The collaboration began around the 2019 Le Guess Who? festival, where Higgins served as artist curator. Taking their name from a mythical island of oak and beech woodlands, the pair draw on a shared fascination with ancient harmony and electronic experimentation.
Recorded over three years between Berlin and Higgins’s studio in upstate New York, Mist makes improvisation and the intuitive possibilities of processing chains central to its composition. Cello improvisations by composer Judith Hamann add another voice to its shifting terrain.
