Product Info

Johnny Cash had performed prison concerts since 1958 where he played the same venue as recorded here in 1969, San Quentin Jail. Cash had an affinity and empathy for prisoners, starting a reform campaign in 1972, with this concert following 1968's "At Folsom Prison" which is his definitive recording in this environment. Cash sounds tired but immediately develops a rapport with the prisoners, having them eating out of the palm of his hand from the off. It's an old fashioned skill being able to communicate intuitively with an audience, a skill many modern performers have lost, but part of the beauty of this collection is that superb interaction with the caged men, who welcome Cash like one of their own. This is partly due to Cash's publicly stated sympathies for prisoners, partly due to his strong public persona as 'The Man In Black' and an outlaw character.
