Mario Batkovic’s II occupies a singular space between composition, performance and sonic experimentation. The Bern-based composer, accordionist and multi-instrumentalist has developed an intensely personal language through his exploration of the accordion’s timbre, mechanics, physicality and rhythmic potential.
Following his acclaimed self-titled debut and INTROSPECTIO, II ventures further into uncompromising experimental territory. Overlapping voices and forceful rhythmic structures evoke analogue synthesizers before falling away into near-total silence, the breath of the bellows and a single frequency.
The album is built entirely around the physical relationship between one musician and one instrument. There are no loops or electronic layers: every sound comes from Batkovic’s exploration of the accordion itself.
