Manchester trio Aerial Salad return with third album Ideal World, a sharp-eyed portrait of a divided, misinformed and phone-addled Britain. Building on the punk rush of Dirt Mall and the songwriting of ROI, Jamie Munro, Mike Wimbleton and drummer Jake Marshall bring a new dynamic range to their sound.
The band began with a dare at Florida’s The Fest in 2016: asked whether they could play, the organiser told Munro and Wimbleton to start a band first. They returned the following year, and a chaotic set on borrowed equipment became a formative experience.
On Ideal World, Munro credits learning The Smiths’ “The Headmaster Ritual” with opening up a fresh chapter, with Marr-like guitar shimmer running through the record. “Let's Change Our Lives” celebrates confidence found through music, “This Year” tackles doomscrolling and “From The Same Cloth” finds peace in being yourself. Keyboard-led “Devil At A Loss” reveals a crooning side somewhere between Morrissey and Nick Cave.
This edition is pressed on green vinyl with blue splatter.
