Kurdish/Syrian singer and bouzouki player Mohammad Syfkhan returns to Nyahh Records with I Love You Ireland, his first album made entirely of original compositions. Recorded with a full band and string arrangements assisted by Syrian cellist and composer Naseem Alatrash, it draws on Middle Eastern and North African sounds alongside the energy of Kurdish dabke.
The album is deeply personal: its title expresses gratitude to the country where Syfkhan and his family found safety. On “Al Huriya”, he explores the rhythm of an Irish reel, acknowledging the musicians and supportive community he has encountered in Ireland.
“Ah Yu Donia” gives voice to grief for his son, who was killed by ISIS. Its strings offer a compassionate accompaniment to a song confronting loss and searching for understanding.
A musician since 1980, Syfkhan led the Al-Rabie Band in Syria while also working as a surgical nurse. Following his debut I Am Kurdish, this collection brings his musical history into dialogue with new collaborations and the place he now calls home.
