Hellingly is the debut album from Luft, the Berlin-based band led by former TOY frontman Tom Dougall, alongside Ani Mijatović on keys, Sam Davies on guitar, Rob Henderson on bass and Aaron Singh on drums.
Written following Dougall’s move from London, these ten songs trace changing city lives, old worlds slipping away and the possibilities of a new home. Wistful, romantic and nocturnal, the album takes its name from the former asylum near where Dougall grew up in East Sussex, its lingering presence becoming a metaphor for the memories and alternative worlds that colour the record.
Produced by Luke Haines of The Auteurs and Black Box Recorder, Hellingly pairs sharp, melodic songwriting with mordant observation and post-new wave poise. Mijatović’s spectral vocals and elegant keys meet Davies’ lysergic guitar and a tightly interlocked rhythm section, drawing on kitchen-sink storytelling, krautrock riffs and outsider pop without losing the band’s own identity.
