More Info
Frog in the Belly of a Snake is Johanna Warren’s seventh solo album and her first since Lessons for Mutants (2022). Self-produced, it grew from unguarded demos never intended for release. Warren returned to the same studio, band and tape machine to develop the material, adding new songs and arrangements before finishing the record in her bedroom.
The album moves between lush full-band arrangements and stark a cappella recitation, bringing psych-folk and indie rock together with synthesizers, dense vocal harmonies and outdoor field recordings. Its twelve-voice Cosmic Serpent Choir includes Sadie Dupuis, Vera Sola, Elvis Perkins, Rain Phoenix, Cornelia Murr and Chris Harford.
After stepping away from touring in 2023 to focus on her health, Warren found a route back to creativity through farming, foraging and plant medicine. These meditative, playful and sometimes unsettling songs explore what feeds us, what consumes us and the shifting boundary between the two, finding unexpected joy in cycles of death and renewal.
The LP edition is pressed on random-colour vinyl. Also available on CD.
