Stax had the MGs; Motown had the Funk Brothers; Fame had The Fame Gang a crack studio outfit that provided the necessary backing for hundreds of essential soul and pop records made at the Fame studio in the late 1960s and early 1970s. As with the MGs, the players took advantage of studio downtime to lay down their own off-the-cuff funky jams, several of which developed into items strong enough to release. Grits And Gravy The Best Of The Fame Gang gathers the cream of these recordings in a scintillating stew of soulful grooves. The compilation is named for the second of the groups 45s, a hotly rated item amongst deejays today. The act s strongest singles sides are included here, along with selections from their Capitol album Solid Gold but the meat of the programme is in the plethora of previously unissued cuts such as Soul Stutterin, Crime Don't Pay, Cannonball and Shoalin, all brimming with warm, funky and soulful vibes. Hot versions of items such as Sly's Stand and Cannonball Adderley's Walk Tall are an added bonus. Grits And Gravy is part of Ace Records ongoing reissue programme of the Fame catalogue, and is the result of some intense vault inspection: so count on top-notch sound and thoroughly researched notes, based on interviews with several of the members of this remarkable aggregation.
