Some may question whether this psychedelic masterpiece should be called a Mod Classic. Certainly it is at the nexus of Mod moving into rock, but the combination of West Coast harmonies, spaced out but biting guitars, and a swinging jazzy groove could only have come from those steeped in the mod world.
Produced by Scene Club DJ, and Sue Records head honcho Guy Stevens - the man who helped The Who and The Stones find appropriate cover versions from his legendary record collection - its pedigree is clear. And when you consider that Mighty Baby emerged from the ashes of The Action, it seems that the Modernist pedigree is very strong.
Both tracks were taken from the group’s self-titled debut album originally released on John Curd’s Head label, and House Without Windows has never appeared on 7-inch single before. Egyptian Tomb was released in France and Holland, but at over 5 minutes long and cut at 45, sound quality perhaps suffered a little bit on those super rare original releases, so we have cut at 33RPM for extra oomph!
Presented in the new Countdown Mod Classics geometric house-bag and pressed on white vinyl to complete the monochrome look, limited to 500 copies.
