Roy Budd’s original score to the 1975 caper film Diamonds, starring Richard Roundtree (Shaft) and Robert Shaw (Jaws), featuring the iconic R&B group The Three Degrees. The soundtrack includes “Main Titles”, sampled by drum ’n’ bass pioneer LTJ Bukem.
Shot on location in London, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, Diamonds follows a meticulously planned raid on the Tel Aviv Diamond Exchange. What first appears to be a straightforward caper conceals an intense sibling rivalry beneath an insatiable hunger for wealth.
Director-producer Menahem Golan invited Budd to Tel Aviv to watch a roughly assembled hour of the film and absorb its setting and atmosphere. When the stars returned to London to complete shooting, Budd began writing the score.
Hearing the main theme in the recording studio, Golan immediately saw its potential as a song. The Three Degrees happened to be in London at the time, and their involvement helped bring another Roy Budd classic to life.
