Playing the Angel is the eleventh studio album by Depeche Mode. The album has a much more raw and gritty sound than some of its predecessors, leaning more towards the darker tones heard on Ultra and Songs Of Faith And Devotion. The record has been touted as more organic, mainly for using more analogue synths over digital ones. In addition, most of the soundscapes presented are harsher and groovier than the more mellow Exciter.
