Dave Hamilton's Detroit Soul Sound 1965-1977

This seven-by-seven-inch box set celebrates Dave Hamilton’s Detroit soul productions from 1965–1977. A songwriter, musician and studio producer whose career spanned blues, jazz, gospel and soul, Hamilton wrote or contributed to ten of the fourteen songs collected here and produced them all.

Ace’s exploration of Hamilton’s tape vaults began in 1990, following Richard “Gilly” Gilbert’s discovery that a covered-up Northern Soul favourite at Wigan Casino was Hamilton’s production for Little Ann Bridgeforth. The archive continues to yield discoveries, including the first public appearance of Chico & Buddy’s funky “You Got Me Where You Want Me”.

The selection ranges from the urgent dancefloor soul of the Ravins and O.C. Tolbert to Hamilton’s own bluesy “Take Care Of Your Own Business” and jazz-inflected “Soul Suite”. The Moderations’ “Ride The Disco Train”, recordings by Felecia Johnson and the New Experience, and enhanced audio for Little Ann’s “What Should I Do” and “Deep Shadows” complete a tribute to an inventive figure in Detroit music.
