Recorded live in the UK in 2025, But What Time Is It Really? brings together Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson with Eric Random and Oliver Harrap for a set dedicated to the memory of Richard H. Kirk. Originally available only directly and on tour, it revisits Cabaret Voltaire’s electronic catalogue through live voices, instruments, samples and field recordings.
Mallinder contributes vocals, bass, keyboards and samples, with Watson on organ, modular synthesis, samples and field recordings. Random adds keyboards and guitar, while Harrap provides electronic percussion.
Engineered and mixed by Benge, who also contributed keyboards and electronic drums during the original rehearsals, the recordings were arranged and produced by Mallinder and Benge at Memetune Studios and mastered by James Trevascus. Artwork is by Dan Conway and Paul Burgess.
The magenta vinyl edition features ten tracks across two sides. The CD offers a separate sixteen-track running order, including “24-24”, “Animation”, “Taxi Music” and “Sensoria”.
