“I skirted death and brought in new life.” Written between a motorcycle crash and the birth of his second daughter, VEGA finds FaltyDL, aka Drew Lustman, tracing the fallout of two life-altering events and the clarity that followed. Restless, euphoric and bruised, it is the sound of a life thrown off course and the music that emerged from it.
After nearly twenty years moving between jungle, house, garage, ambient, techno and broken beats, Lustman draws on influences including Chris Clark, early Nine Inch Nails, King Crimson and John McLaughlin. The title track holds anxiety and hope in suspension, while “Old Pioneers (Escape Death)” confronts the crash directly and “New Pioneers” looks beyond it.
Family life gives the album its wider shape: “Walk With Mila”, “Antlers”, “The Kids” and “Be With Me” explore the everyday joys and pressures of raising two daughters. Rather than forcing survival and renewal into a neat narrative, VEGA lets those experiences spill into its restless electronic sound.
