More Info

Liz Harris, also known as Grouper, presents Music For Two Films About Water, bringing together two recent scores for short films by Tanja Engelberts and Takashi Makino. Each explores water through layers of mellotron, tape loops, Wurlitzer and field recordings, blending literal, improvisatory and impressionistic responses to the theme.

Harris has worked closely with film since she began making and performing music, accompanying both her own work and that of other filmmakers. Her collaborations include nearly a decade with Paul Clipson and multiple live performances with Dicky Bahto and Takashi Makino.

“Untitled (from We Exhale)” accompanies Engelberts’ film, which takes the perspective of the Rhône itself. Tracing centuries of damming, channelling and industrial pollution, the work asks what a poisoned river sounds like when it exhales. Engelberts gathers and rearranges traces found on the surface of landscapes, allowing the past to be recognised and possible futures to be imagined.

“Untitled (from Constellation)” scores the film iteration of Makino’s project exploring how new meanings emerge from existing images, memories and fragments. Images appear and disappear within shimmering water textures, remaining abstract and open to interpretation. Inspired by the way ancient people connected scattered stars into narratives, the film invites viewers to form their own relationships between images as fantasy and reality merge in an oceanic, lucid dream.
