Johnny Marr is back with The Age Of Everything, his fifth solo album and the latest chapter in a career that has already covered The Smiths, Electronic, Modest Mouse, The Cribs and pretty much every corner of the guitar world. Written in London, road-tested during a North American tour and recorded back home in Manchester, it’s a record that Marr describes as his most cathartic yet, with the songs dealing with the general sense of overload that comes from living in a world where absolutely everything is coming at you all the time.
Coming at you like 115 charges, these ten tracks are sharp, fast and guitar-heavy, with opening single “Spin” setting the pace with a pretty frantic rush of guitars and a sense of barely contained anxiety. “It’s Time”, “Beyond The Rain”, “How Come” and “That Feeling” keep things moving, while “Ophelia” and “In And Out Of Love” bring a slightly more melodic, reflective side to the record. There’s still plenty of that unmistakable Marr guitar sound throughout, but it doesn’t feel like a nostalgia exercise - these are new songs dealing with the present, rather than trying to recreate the past.
