Mother Church’s debut album, Yolk, was captured live to tape in the crypt of Bethnal Green Church over just two days. Its exquisitely constructed songs bring together lyrically rich reflections on love, faith and motherhood with the group’s distinctive wit and insight.
Drawing on expansive late Romanticism, early twentieth-century classical music, obscure Estonian folk singers and ancient poetry, Yolk adds touches of dreamy modern indie. Improvised strings and clarinet melodies weave through a collection of folk compositions that reflects history back through vividly performed songs.
Revd Tati Gutteridge and James Donovan, a founding member of HMLTD, first crossed paths during mass at an Oxford University chapel before collaborating in avant-garde folk band Bishopskin. As Mother Church, they are joined by classically trained violinist Hana Miyagi, whose sweeping, largely improvised strings shape the album’s sound.
