This double-LP collection selects extras from the sessions surrounding µ-Ziq’s Tango N’Vectif, originally released in 1993. Written by Mike Paradinas in his late teens with help from Frank Naughton, the music draws on early Aphex, Detroit techno and UK hardcore, forging a spirited, funky and lo-fi version of rave.
Crunchy drums meet melodies poised between John Barry and classic television themes. Before owning a computer, Paradinas recorded live keyboards alongside drum machines on a four-track recorder. Working with Naughton brought an Atari 1040ST and Cubeat software into the mix, as the pair pooled equipment and recorded together in Wimbledon.
After a proposed EP for Evolution was shelved, a demo reached Aphex Twin through connections at Kingston University. Paradinas wrote much of Tango N’Vectif over two weeks using borrowed equipment, and a release with Rephlex was agreed by the end of 1992. His advance arrived in the form of an Atari computer of his own.
