More Info

On first listen, this album sounds much more MOR than anything Tori has done before. It has a very clean, 1970s studio sound to it. On subsequent listens, however, you realize that this album is very deep and complex, especially lyrically. Gone is the upfront anger and angst from some of her earlier albums. Here, Tori is a mature woman with important things to say who realizes that being a bit calmer can be a better way to get the message across. This album simmers more than it boils, and occasionally veers into nostalgia, but overall it is an honest look at a fractured country. Musically and lyrically, it is rich in imagery, sensuality, feminism, and, sometimes, regret and a bittersweet feeling.
