Freddie Gibbs proves he isn't slowing down or slacking off one bit with this formidable 2022 offering. He treads the line perfectly between the more old school sounds of his collaborations with Madlib and The Alchemist and the trappier leaning beats utilised on his earlier mix tapes. The result is the most coherent body of songs that Gibbs has put together as a solo effort in his career to date.
Highlights include "Too Much", the undeniable hit from the the album which fully shows off Gibbs' knack for a hook in the chorus topped with a tight, fast-paced verse that'll have you reaching for the rewind before you can say "skrrt skrrt". "Feel No Pain" is a brooding number, built around slinky bass and floating eastern melodies, boasting a catchy vocal from Anderson Paak and amazing guest verse from Wu Tang's Raekwon. Another rapper who keeps improving with age, Pusha T, pops up on "Gold Rings" which hits hard with its "I'll be rock, rock, rocking til the cops come knocking" refrain.
Built around the loose theme of a luxury resort and spa in Vegas called the Triple S, the songs are threaded together with skits of friends (some notable [eg. Jesus] some not [eg. Joe Rogan]) leaving messages on his answer machine. It's a fun idea but as with all skits can get a little tiresome on repeat listens. It's a time honoured hip hop tradition though and these are a long, long way off being the worst offenders of the genre.
