Because Music celebrates the 50th anniversary of Cerrone’s debut album, Love In C Minor (Cerrone I), a landmark record that brought French disco to the world and established him as the French King of Disco.
Inspired by the New York disco records he discovered while running a chain of record shops, Cerrone built his solo debut around the driving sound of his bass drum. Recorded at London’s Trident Studios with arranger Don Ray, the sixteen-minute title track filled an entire side of the LP with an uncompromising blend of rhythm and sensual vocals.
After record companies rejected the track, Cerrone released it himself, trusting that club dancers would embrace what radio would not. An accidentally shipped box of records reached New York, where the album found its way into the hands of radio and club DJs and became a hit on the city’s disco scene.
