More Info

The house that founder Bill Curtis built, the Fatback Band (or just plain Fatback as they became in 1982), has sometimes been a 6-piece and sometimes anything up to a 9-piece band. Their records for Spring and Event are classics of the '70s and '80s dance scene, packed with "party" atmosphere, undoubtedly aided by the "live" feel that the band induced by always having an audience at their recording sessions. Is This The Future? came out in 1983, 4 years after the band cut what is regarded as the first rap record King Tim III (Personality Jock), and it contains the 1983 R&B hits The Girl Is Fine (So Fine) (Spring 3030-.-it stayed on the charts 14 weeks, peaking at No 28) and Is This The Future? (Spring 3032, it stayed on the charts 9 weeks, peaking at No 43). The Evelyn Thomas song Spread Love (Spring 414) became a single hit for Fatback 2 years later (staying in the charts for 3 weeks and peaking at No 88).
