The Clean’s 1982 single “Getting Older” returns on black 7-inch vinyl for the first time since its original release, and receives its first vinyl release in North America.
Issued after the band’s first split in late 1982, “Getting Older” was their modest attempt at a “Wall Of Sound” production. Overdubbed viola, trumpet, maracas and drone guitar are joined by backing vocals from Chris Knox and Martin Phillipps.
The B-sides capture the band at their most experimental. “Scrap Music” layers two separate performances of the same instrumental, with one panned from side to side, while “Whatever I Do is Right/Wrong” dispenses with guitar altogether.
This edition preserves a small hidden extra: a few seconds of group discussion and false starts before “Whatever I Do is Right/Wrong”, humorously titled “Arguing” on the back cover and omitted from previous digital releases.
Remastered by Tex Houston from fresh transfers of the original master tapes held at the Alexander Turnbull Library, part of the National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa.
