On "Fireside Favourites" Frank Tovey lines up his queasy lyrical truisms against a dissonant backdrop that offsets Fad's compulsively danceable rhythms, which, back in the day, must have been a turn-off for fans of the new dance synth-pop style who were just hanging out for a good time, and this state of affairs limited Fad's appeal to a wider pop audience. But Fad's low profile in the charts has meant that, well into the 21st century, Fad Gadget is an artist that fans of abrasive proto-industrial techno are still discovering. And that's no surprise. Back in 1980 the new synthesizer equipment was still pretty primitive, yet the scraping soundscapes heard on "Fireside Favourites" have a hauntingly convincing sonic authority, aided by Tovey's visceral words (adding in that all important touch of Gothic horror - another vital component of the Fad Gadget cult).
