Burned is the seventh album from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, arriving six years after New Fragility. Emerging from grief, confusion and heartbreak, Alec Ounsworth’s songs trace a journey from loss towards renewed hope.
Determined not to make a record of unrelenting darkness, Ounsworth wrote with the live experience in mind after revisiting the feverish energy of the band’s debut on its anniversary tour. The result is a vibrant, dynamic collection that follows the stylistic twists longtime listeners have embraced over two decades.
“Fever of the Mind” layers synth riffs around themes of depression, alienation and generational trauma, while “Late Wish”, “Does Anybody Work Here?” and the title track reveal the album’s breadth. Burned holds life’s highs and lows together, insisting on forward movement as colour begins to return.
Produced by Alec Ounsworth and Nick Krill, with mixing and mastering by Dave Fridmann and Mike Fridmann.
