Sister Ray Interviews: Do Nothing

For our next Sister Ray Interview's episode we have the fantastic Do Nothing.

We loved their Record Store Day release Adventures In Success - a one off pressing of the bands cover of Will Powers "Adventures In Success", featuring a never before heard remix by Hiro Ama.

Hey guys, thanks for spending the time to talk to us. How did it feel being apart of Record Store Day this year?
It was really exciting! Especially since it didn't happen last year, it felt a little more special. I'm glad we got a proper release for our Adventure in Success cover, that really was something just to tide us over during lockdown.

Do you think record shops are still important in an era dominated by digital releases?
Absolutely, lots of people (me included) will use streaming to find new music, then head to the record shop and buy an album if they liked what they've heard. I also love going in and finding super cheap second hand shit I've never heard of, and finding some gems.

Moving onto the record, what is the story behind your single 'Adventures in Success'?
Its a tune by Will Powers, its such a great, tongue in cheek, groovy song. We've toyed with the idea of coming onstage to it many times but never had the balls to. This one was all Chris (vocals) so everything you hear is produced, played, and mixed by him. I think he was losing his mind writing Do Nothing songs a bit, and this provided him with a nice little break.

How has being separated from a live audience affected your relationship with writing music?
A lot, I think. With our first EP, we'd played all those songs for quite a while in a live setting, and they evolved naturally over the course of time. With Glueland there was a lot less time for us all to play it together before we went into the studio, so we had to be a bit more meticulous with it. I think we enjoy that process more to be honest, we love being in the studio. Having said that, it's amazing to get back out and play, 16 months is far too long.

What have been your favourite lockdown discoveries (musical or otherwise)?
We're collectively obsessed with the song Alone Again, Naturally by Gilbert O'Sullivan at the moment. It's so hilariously sad, and the melody and songwriting is unbelievable and we cannot get enough of it.

What are your goals for the coming year?
At the minute we're focused on touring, we've got a lot of festivals and shows for the rest of the year and I think we just want to get really into it. We're working in a lot of new material at the moment so we'll try and fit writing in around performing, and hit it hard once the shows are done.

As I'm sure you're aware, we're all about vinyl at Sister Ray. My question to you is what was the last record you bought ?
A weird 12" remix of Cosmic Girl by Jamiroquai haha

And the last record you played?
Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock

The last record shop you visited?
Robs Records in Nottingham

Finally, what record do you currently not own but wish you did?
I See Seaweed by The Drones
