Fresh off the back of rapturously received stadium dates and headline festival slots, "The Ballad of Darren" finds Albarn, Coxon and co staring middle-aged anxiety in the face with a set largely composed of classic Albarn ballads that sigh and swoon with a palpable nostalgia. Seasoned with Coxon's trademark, erratic guitar lines and slipping into the occasional rock out to harken back to their rambunctious heyday, the balance works really well to create a compelling and truly welcome comeback album.
