Sorry’s third album, COSPLAY, is their most audacious and fully realised work to date, a complex and unnerving study of identity, imitation, and modern dissociation. Moving past the dark, urban anxiety of their previous records, the North London five-piece—centred on the songwriting partnership of Asha Lorenz and Louis O’Bryen—venture into a highly stylised, almost hallucinatory soundscape that is both intensely intimate and unsettlingly synthetic.
The album takes its title and core concept from the idea that we are all performing roles, borrowing and blurring identities in a chaotic, digital age. This philosophy manifests musically as a masterful collage, fusing the rhythmic tension of trip-hop and industrial techno with the jagged angularity of post-punk and unexpected flashes of pop-goth. Tracks like the industrial grind of "Waxwing" and the menacing, skittering pulse of "Jetplane" showcase their unique ability to twist familiar sounds into uncanny shapes.
Highlights include the lead single "Echoes," a beautiful, mantra-like track built around a central metaphor of calling into the dark and hearing a third, ambiguous presence return the sound. Conversely, "Today Might Be The Hit" provides a brief, janky, and surprisingly buoyant moment of mid-’00s indie-rock energy, before the closing track, "JIVE," builds from footsteps and a whisper into a cathartic roar of sound. COSPLAY is a thrilling, unpredictable listen that solidifies Sorry’s position as one of the UK’s most inventive and unique bands, revealing new layers with every replay.
