The first of many hypnotic soundtracks that Krautrock legends Popol Vuh crafted for Werner Herzog, this score for 1972’s “Aguirre, The Wrath Of God” perfectly couples the breathtaking visuals.
Standalone, the album works as a perfect precurser to ambient music, drawing comparisons to the pioneering work of Brian Eno later in the decade. With guitars that fade in and out in spectral fashion and a “choir-organ” that create pillows of sound like the clouds the film’s conquistadors emerge from in the incredible opening scene.
