'Piano Composed’ is Howard Jones’ third piano-based album.
With this collection, he has taken a different approach to the first two which were ‘one-off’ improvisations on piano.
His friend BT encouraged him to compose a piano piece every day. Over a period of time, Howard accumulated about 15-20 pieces that he thought he could develop. During the lockdown period of time, he spent several months polishing the pieces into ten finished tracks that he was happy with.
These ten pieces are featured on the ‘Piano Composed Ivory’ vinyl LP format of this release.
However, subsequent to this, Howard spent a day with a Spirio piano at Steinway’s showroom in London. As a result of what he experienced that day, Howard sold his old Steinway D piano and bought the Steinway Spirio.
This Steinway Spirio piano allowed Howard to add octaves or multiple octaves and create pieces that you couldn’t actually physically play unless you had five or six hands! The result was a kind of evolution of the original Ivory pieces which Howard has called ‘Piano Composed Spirio’.
So you have two different versions of these compositions; ‘Piano Composed Ivory’ available on vinyl and this alternatively sequenced ‘Piano Composed Spirio’ available on CD.
