The seminal 1966 classic as a limited edition 60th anniversary set of six 7” singles
Released in 1966 as Over, Under, Sideways, Down in the U.S., and The Yardbirds in the UK (and widely known as Roger The Engineer ever since) Over, Under, Sideways, Down was The Yardbirds’ only studio album of entirely original material.
Recorded in London at a moment when British R&B bands were pushing toward psychedelia, it captured the band in transition from their blues-club roots to a new, experimental sound driven by Jeff Beck’s groundbreaking guitar work. Songs like Over Under Sideways Down and The Nazz Are Blue mixed blues energy with distortion, Eastern scales, and unusual time signatures, defining the sound that would later feed into both hard rock and psychedelia.
Beck’s use of feedback, sustain, and fuzz effects gave tracks a sense of invention that influenced everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Jimmy Page, while songs like Hot House of Omagararshid and He’s Always There were full of studio experimentation courtesy of Paul Samwell-Smith’s tape loops, droning guitars, and haunting harmonies. It was all delivered with the restless energy that made The Yardbirds one of Britain’s most innovative mid-’60s bands and the combination of pioneering production, Keith Relf’s eerie vocals, Beck’s sonic daring, and the driving rhythms of Chris Dreja (rhythm guitar), Samwell-Smith (bass) and Jim McCarty (drums), made it a milestone in rock’s evolution. Critics have subsequently come to view it as the band’s greatest achievement and a snapshot of that 1960s moment when pop became pop art.
For its 60th anniversary in 2026, Demon are delighted to present the album as a limited- edition box set, comprising six coloured-vinyl 7” singles in gatefold wallets. It includes song lyrics, contemporary photographs and artwork elements of both the original U.S. and UK releases, spotlighting Chris Dreja’s instantly recognizable ‘Roger’ cartoons.
