Lance Gurisik’s passion for music was ignited later than most, as he first strummed a guitar at the age of 16 and began teaching himself to play along to his favourite bands. He was soon encouraged to audition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he completed his Honours in composition whilst learning from Australia’s best jazz and classical composers.
After graduating, Lance embarked on a career as an inhouse composer at Song Zu, where he created a diverse range of music for television shows and campaigns. During this time, he also toured as an electronic artist across Australia, collaborating with renowned musicians like Ngaiire and remixing tracks for prominent acts such as The Presets and Rufus.
Lance’s artistic path has since led him to residency at Manor House in London as an electronic producer, including performances at Secret Garden, Dimensions festival and The Boiler Room.
Since returning to Sydney, Lance has devoted himself to producing larger bodies of work influenced by some of his idols he found at university, including Terry Riley, Keith Jarrett, Stravinsky and Miles Davis.
‘Cull Portal’ was an idea that came to life during Sydney’s second lockdown in 2021. It’s an exploration of modal harmony and improvisation, extrapolated over the course of eight tracks. Woozing analogue synths, grand piano, string section, live drums and Jeremy Rose’s tenor sax set the tone for this spiritual jazz / electronic release. ‘Cull Portal’ definitely nods its head to the past while intrinsically pushing the genre forward at the same time.
‘Cull Portal’ has been nominated for Best Jazz Album at the ARIA Music Awards, the most prestigious award in the Australian Music Industry.
