26 Jul Newsletter 26/07/19 ft: Freddie Gibbs & Madlib | Cuco | B Boys
Another quiet one… is everyone on holiday? Anyway, I’ll keep it swift as time is precious; we have BBQs and sun bathing to attend to! So on we go…
Freddie Gibbs & Madlib take the top spot with new album “Bandana“. This is the follow-up to their last collaborative album “Piñata” in 2014, with stellar guest spots from Pusha T, Killer Mike (Run The Jewels), Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def), and Black Thought.
The duo’s seamless collaboration juxtaposes two giant talents: Madlib, the prolific producer with a record collection spanning all genres and eras, an adept sampler, peer to the late J Dilla (his collaborator on Champion Sound and his musical soulmate), foil for DOOM, hip hop’s Charlie Parker, with whom he created the landmark album “Madvillainy”. Freddie Gibbs, the gravel-voiced rapper, a vocal athlete, a star-on-the-rise knocked off course who refused to give up and has since offered some of the most compelling rap music in the past ten years.
Our pick this week comes in the form of “Para Mi” the debut album from the endearing 21 year-old Omar Banos AKA Cuco. Combining earnest Spanglish love lyrics with an inscrutable deep-meme millennial sense of humor to create a persona that is at once carefree and emotionally involved — the way teenagers are. His brand of dream pop takes cues from jazz and hip-hop, combining homemade drum packs and loops with self-taught keyboard, trumpet, guitar and his sing-talking cadence to create twinkly lullabies. Fresh!
Another excellent new Dinked release, this time from New York’s B Boys with “Dudu“. Their raw, yet meticulous style is characterized by rhythmic complexity, commanding riffs, and introspective lyrics that are as playful and self-aware as they are cutting. As well as standard editions, we have the limited hand-numbered ‘Dinked’ edition of 300 on 180g gold coloured vinyl with exclusive obi strip.
“La Torre Ibiza” is the 15 track, third volume in this series compiled by Pete Gooding and Mark Barrot, collecting tracks that draws inspiration from the island’s hedonistic history. Old records merge with new boundary pushing productions, but all in-keeping with the theme of the true Balearic soundscape.
Minami Deutsch return with more authentic krautrock, just as great as before but this time on cool, limited picture disc. The “Can’t Get There” EP also features remixes from Jamie Paton and Mythologen.
U.S. label Dais follow up the marvelous Drab Majesty album with another slice of 80s flavoured synth-pop in Body Of Light‘s “Time To Kill“. The Arizona duo (brothers Alexander and Andrew Jarson) deliver their 3rd album and their most refined and cohesive work to date calling on elements of new wave, freestyle, goth, and techno.
The highly regarded Solange album “When I Get Home” finally sees it’s vinyl release too this week.
Trailblazing Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto is joined by revered electronic musician Taylor Deupree on “Live In London“, a live recording, documenting their collaboration at St John-at-Hackney Church in 2014 – part of Thirty Three Thirty Three’s flagship concert series ‘St John Sessions’. On double translucent blue vinyl.

Well that’s all from us. As always, thanks for reading and have a marvelous weekend and don’t forget that sun block!
