16 Aug Newsletter 16/08/19 ft: The Murder Capital | Here Lies Man | Sleater-Kinney
Things are gradually picking up as the traditional summer lull passes so here’s your mid-August selection of vinyl new releases and pre-orders…
Hotly tipped The Murder Capital release their debut album “When I Have Fears” this week on Human Season. Described across the press as ‘art-punk’, ‘post-punk’, ‘indie’ and even ‘post-rock’, the Dublin band clearly draw on a plethora of influences. This combined with their masterful songwriting makes for a surprisingly accomplished debut and one that we’ve been looking forward to ever since their thrilling performance at the Great Escape festival earlier this year. With legendary producer Flood on production duties it looks like our wait was worthwhile. We’ll have the limited edition marbled rust colour vinyl as well as the standard black vinyl and CD.
We have a Dinked double header this week with exclusive Dinked editions of:
Blanck Mass‘s “Animated Violence Mild” – “these eight tracks are the diary of a year of work steeped in honing craft, self-discovery, and grief – the latter of which reared its head at the final hurdle of producing this record and created a whole separate narrative: grief, both for what I have lost personally, but also in a global sense, for what we as a species have lost and handed over to our blood-sucking counterpart, consumerism, only to be ravaged by it.” – Benjamin John Power (Blanck Mass) – Limited edition of 500 on blood red vinyl with tote bag, sticker and print.
Here Lies Man – “No Ground To Walk Upon” – Third album from the Los Angeles-based band comprised of members of Antibalas, mixing heavy rock with afrobeat and funk. “We’re very conscious of how the rhythms service the riffs,” explains founder and vocalist/guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Marcos Garcia (who also plays guitar in Antibalas) of the band’s sound. “Tony Iommi’s (Black Sabbath) innovation was to make the riff the organizing principle of a song. We are taking that same approach but employing a different organizing principle: For Iommi it was the blues, for us it comes directly from Africa.” Limited to 400 copies, hand-numbered, on purple with orange swirl vinyl plus custom tote bag, patch and signed band photo.
Sleater-Kinney join us for their 10th album release in “The Center Won’t Hold“. Produced by Annie Clark (St Vincent), it addresses transformation as it relates to the corrosion and decomposition of forms. Fractured and frayed by age or by loss, by internecine politics, by trauma or depression, these 11 songs ask what remains of a body, a human spirit, a relationship, a city, a country. We have the limited LP plus bonus black vinyl 7” of “Hurry On Home” & sticker sheet.
Last year, 20-year-old multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Clairo crashed onto our radars with her self-produced debut “Pretty Girl”. The song went viral and quickly catapulted her from dorm-room obscurity to becoming one of the biggest critically acclaimed artists to emerge in 2018. “Immunity” is her debut album, co-produced with Rostam (Vampire Weekend). Limited indies-only edition on beige vinyl.
The 6th Ride album, “This Is Not A Safe Place“, follows 2017’s fine comeback album “The Weather Diaries”. Erol Alkan and Alan Moulder once again on production and mixing duties. On limited edition double green vinyl.
“Thrashing Thru The Passion“, the 7th album from Brooklyn’s The Hold Steady, is a collection of five new songs and five digitally released singles released between November 2017 and March 2019. Limited indies-only edition on brown vinyl.
Over 8 years since “Pala”, Friendly Fires finally return with their 3rd album “Inflorescent“. We’ll have the limited indies-only edition on purple vinyl.
“Infest The Rats” is the 15th album from the ever-prolific Melbourne 7-piece King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard and their hardest and heaviest rocking album to date. On half-red, half-silver vinyl.
