09 Jan New Year, New Records
With the tinsel & baubles packed away, the start of January can be a bit gloomy. But fear not, let’s herald the New Year with a look at the records we’re excited about in the next couple of months.
Shop fave Steve Mason returns with his 5th solo album “About The Light”, so now seems as good as time as any to stop prefacing his name with “Ex Beta Band”. Sharon Van Etten’s “Are We There” blew us away when we first heard it, so waiting 3 years for the follow up has been a chore – first couple of listens to “Remind Me Tomorrow” make me think it’s been worth the wait. For you fuzzy guitar types, Deerhunter are back, along with The Twilight Sad, and hairy South Londoners Toy emerge from a cloud of smoke with album number 3 – there’s a limited Dinked vinyl of the latter too!
From Indie Olympus, gods and lords Bob Mould, The Lemonheads, Ladytron, Swervedriver, Mercury Rev, Lambchop, & Ian Brown all return, plus February sees the first new music from The Specials in three decades (fingers crossed here – please be good).
Spring is the time of new growth, buds flowering, & all that business, so we’re excited to check out the debut from Daughter’s Elena Tonra (as EX:RE), hotly tipped London dance/funk weirdos Stats, Indoor Pets finally release a full length record, and, after a run of much loved Eps, Amber Bain, aka The Japanese House, should brighten up the start of March with some tasty, woozy dreampop.
So not so gloomy then? Remember, nearly all these releases come as lovely limited vinyl editions to brighten up your record shelves, so let’s spring into Spring.
