Metti Una Sera A Cena

Probably the best-known film soundtrack composer in the world, Ennio Morricone’s vast body of work is simply awesome. He gained international recognition in the late 1960s for his scoring of Sergio Leone’s Westerns, leading to work with Bernardo Bertolucci, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Roland Joffe and Brian De Palma, among many others. The soundtrack of Metti, Una Sera A Cena was scored by Morricone in 1969 and arranged by Bruno Nicolai, who plays organ on select tracks; an understated affair by Morricone standards, this easy-listening gem features a variety of styles and musical influences, the best tracks featuring the sensual guiding tones of Edda Dell’Orso’s wordless scats, which help steer the lushly orchestrated moments ever closer to Bossa Nova, as heard on “Alla Luce Del Giorno” and the exceptional title track; in contrast, “Ric Happening” shifts to the East with Indian classical elements, such as a sitar (then also in vogue for psychedelia), while “Nina” veers between light jazz and heavy, heart-tugging orchestration. This mixed bag of a beast was first issued by Cinevox in Italy to accompany the release of the film; somehow, when CBS released their edition a year later for English-speaking audiences, the title had been changed to Love Circle and the track listing slightly altered; this reissue is of the original.
